Join SGFC Today and be a part of History!

Sydney Game Fishing Club (SGFC) is both one of Australia’s most prestigious Game Fishing Clubs, we are also the only club to have its own waterfront clubhouse with a private weigh station (most are part of the local yacht clubs).

Many of our members are World record holders, Australian record holders and state and club record holders. Many of our members are also past or present professional crewmen and captains so there is a wealth of experience there to learn from.

Another good reason for joining SGFC is if you do manage to hook “a big one” it will only count towards state or national titles if you are affiliated with a GFAA (Game Fishing Association of Australia) club like SGFC.

By Joining Sydney Game Fishing Club you can also learn tips and tricks from tournament winning teams and possibly even get the opportunity of learning firsthand by spending the day fishing with some of them.

Becoming a member of Sydney Game Fishing Club in Watsons Bay offers access to premier maritime and boating facilities, exclusive angling competitions, tournaments and membership to a passionate community backed by over 70 years of heritage.

Established at its current clubhouse site on Watsons Bay wharf in 1952, the club has long served as a prominent hub for game fishing in Australia, famously attracting high-profile historical members, international travelers, TV personalities and fishing legends and it remains an influential institution dedicated to the sport, marine education, conservation and local camaraderie.

Unrivalled Waterfront Facilities and Boat Access

The most immediate benefit of joining the club is access to the stunning clubhouse located right on the waterfront at end of Watsons Bay Wharf. Serving as a relaxed environment and watering hole for members and their families, the clubhouse accommodates up to 120 people and features its own private weigh station, cleaning tables, wharf facilities, toilets, kitchen facilities and a bar.

A perfect location just inside the heads to wash down the boat, fillet your catch, relax and enjoy a cold drink or two and watch the sunset over Sydney Harbour at the end of a hard days fishing/cruising with friends and family!

Some exclusive privileges our members enjoy

  • The ability to dock the morning before and evening after an offshore trip
  • Members can tie up at the private wharf with friends and family for a meal and drinks at Watsons Bay
  • Quick and easy guest pick-ups and drop-offs from our private wharf
  • Membership grants official affiliation with the NSW Game Fishing Association (Central Zone).
  • Unlimited Access to free Monthly Knowledge, Educational Seminars and Club Meetings
  • Access to regular social events for the entire family, like Kids Fishing Day, Prawn and Oyster Lunches (charges apply) and other social and member family friendly events

A Welcoming, Family-Oriented Community

Despite its status as an elite fishing body, SGFC maintains a strong, family-friendly culture with regular family social events, local community charity events and dedicated kids’ fishing events to encourage the next generation of young anglers.

The educational initiatives and knowledge-sharing programs at SGFC are specifically designed to bridge the gap between novice anglers and veteran offshore fishermen. Rather than keeping hard-earned secrets close to the chest, the club operates on a culture of mentorship to foster skilled, ethical, and safe game fishing for all to enjoy.

It also serves as an excellent networking platform, connecting boat owners with enthusiastic anglers looking to join a crew, gain knowledge and fostering lasting friendships across Sydney’s broader boating community.

Because game fishing requires highly coordinated boat crews, the club actively connects boat owners with newer members looking for a spot on the deck. This informal crew matching allows less experienced anglers to step directly onto fully equipped offshore game boats, learning real-time navigation, sounder interpretation, and valuable fishing skills directly from veteran skippers with potentially decades of real world experience.

Sustainable Practices and Research Mentorship

Education at SGFC extends far beyond catching fish; it heavily emphasises conservation and scientific contribution. Experienced members guide newcomers through the strict protocols of the NSW DPI Game Fish Tagging Program and understanding about sustainability and handling fish correctly.

Members learn the correct biological placement for tags, how to handle apex predators alongside the boat to minimize stress, and how to accurately record data that helps marine scientists track migration routes and growth rates across Australia.

The club places a heavy emphasis on mentoring new entrants and developing advanced skills. Experienced club members regularly share practical advice regarding local waters, where the current hot bite is, seasonal migration patterns, and tips for targeting pelagic species like marlin and tuna.

(There is even a private SGFC Members only Facebook page where insider information is shared among members….shhh!).

Informational Evenings

SGFC hosts educational informational evenings covering technical elements such as:

  • Expert Bait rigging and lure rigging techniques
  • Technical walkthroughs by seasoned captains detailing topics like heavy-tackle strategies
  • Mastering the art of billfish leadering and tagging techniques
  • Specialised instructional evenings dedicated to the meticulous gear preparation required for big-game fishing
  • Step-by-step training on stitching skipjack, rigging baits, and assembling skirted lure leaders that track perfectly at trolling speeds
  • Mastering high-strength configurations—like the PR knot, FG knot, and reliable crimping methods—that withstand the intense pressure of pelagic game fishing
